Caring for Your Kidneys: The Hardworking Organs You Can't Ignore
Your kidneys filter your blood every minute of every day. Here's how to recognize warning signs and keep them healthy.
Your two kidneys, each about the size of a fist, filter your blood around the clock. They remove waste and excess fluid, balance minerals like potassium and phosphorus, help control blood pressure, and even signal your body to make red blood cells.
A silent condition
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) often develops slowly and without symptoms until kidney function is significantly reduced. The two most common causes are diabetes and high blood pressure.
Signs to discuss with your doctor
Swelling of the feet, ankles or around the eyes
Foamy or bubbly urine
Changes in how often you urinate, especially at night
Persistent tiredness or difficulty concentrating
Loss of appetite or nausea
These signs can have many causes. Only proper tests can tell.
Simple tests, big insights
A urine test (for protein) and a blood test (creatinine, to estimate kidney function) can detect kidney problems early. If you have diabetes, high blood pressure or a family history of kidney disease, ask your doctor about regular screening.
Protecting your kidneys
Keep blood pressure and blood sugar under control.
Drink enough water, unless your doctor advises otherwise.
Eat less salt and fewer processed foods.
Be careful with pain relievers. Frequent use of some over-the-counter painkillers can harm the kidneys. Ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Don't take supplements or herbal remedies without medical advice.
Stay active, avoid smoking and keep a healthy weight.
Living with CKD
CKD can affect the whole body, causing anemia, mineral imbalance and bone problems. With good medical care, many people with CKD live full, active lives. Work closely with your nephrologist and follow your treatment plan.
