Be Cholesterol Smart: Clearing the Path to a Healthier Heart

Not all cholesterol is bad, but too much of the wrong kind can clog your arteries. Learn the numbers that matter and how to improve them.

Cholesterol isn't the enemy. Your body needs it to build cells and make hormones. The trouble starts when there's too much of the wrong kind in your blood.

The good, the bad and the fats

  • LDL ("bad") cholesterol can build up in artery walls, forming plaque that narrows blood vessels.

  • HDL ("good") cholesterol helps carry excess cholesterol away to the liver.

  • Triglycerides are another type of blood fat, often raised by excess sugar, refined carbohydrates and alcohol.

High LDL usually causes no symptoms. A simple blood test, called a lipid profile, is the only way to know your levels. Ask your doctor how often you should be tested.

Why it matters

Over time, plaque buildup can reduce blood flow and lead to heart attack or stroke. Lowering high LDL is one of the most effective ways to protect your heart.

Smart swaps for everyday eating

  • Instead of deep-fried dishes, try grilled, steamed or inihaw.

  • Instead of fatty cuts, chicharon and processed meats, try fish, skinless chicken, tokwa and monggo.

  • Instead of white rice at every meal, try smaller portions, or mix in brown rice.

  • Instead of sweet drinks, try water or unsweetened tea.

  • Instead of chips and pastries, try fruit, or nuts in moderation.

Beyond the plate

Stay active, keep a healthy weight, avoid smoking and limit alcohol. Small changes add up.

When lifestyle isn't enough

Some people have high cholesterol because of genetics or other conditions. If your doctor prescribes cholesterol-lowering medicine, take it consistently and keep up with follow-up tests.
